Local Residency Preference:
All VHDA agencies have a "residency preference." An applicant will qualify for a
residency preference if they currently live, work, or have been hired to work in
the waiting list area. Some agencies have defined their residency preference area
as their area of operation and choose to give waiting list priority to those who
live or work locally. If an agency has not designated its area of operation as
its residency preference area, residency is determined by whether or not an applicant
lives or works in Virginia.
All applicants will be assigned one of the following preferences related to residency:
- The applicant lives/works in the waiting list area (where applicable)
- The applicant lives/works in Virginia
- The applicant is out of state
**Please contact the non-VHDA agencies (HUD Direct Programs) to inquire as to whether any local preferences are in effect for the housing agency.
VHDA does not have waiting list or preference information for HUD Direct voucher agencies.
